JANET TAYLOR

Janet Taylor is a high school art teacher at Naperville North High School (western suburbs of Chicago), teaching any and all media (drawing, painting, digital art, play production, sculpture, jewelry/metals, ceramics). Janet received a B.A. from the University of Iowa in Theatre Arts (Set Design emphasis) and a B.A. in Studio Art (Painting emphasis). After spending 10 years in NYC and Chicago working as a Scenic Artist, she returned to her passion of teaching at the college level. In 2010, Janet received an M.Ed. in Secondary Education at DePaul University, and has taught at 3 different schools including Chicago Public Schools and the suburbs. Over the past 5 years, Janet has worked to develop Choice-Based curriculum in Jewelry/Metals, Photography, Sculpture, Ceramics, and AP Art and Design (all 3 portfolios). You may have seen her presentations at NAEA and/or IAEA over the past several years, in which she discusses her journey (both successes and failures) to move her classroom structure into the Choice/TAB realm. She is also a contributing writer for the Art of Education University Magazine. Janet is a painter and mixed media artist, mother of two, an extroverted introvert, and loves the color orange.

MATTHEW MILKOWSKI
|
Matt Milkowski has taught 10 years of Art Survey, Studio Drawing, & A.P. Drawing Portfolio at Kenwood Academy (Chicago Public Schools). While occasionally tempted to bolt and become a field ecologist of some sort, he currently embraces both the indescribable joys and stresses of being an art educator. He received a BFA in Painting & MFA in Art Education from Boston University. He has presented over 20 times at various national and state art education conventions, the Crocker Art Museum, Depaul University, School of the Art Institute of Chicago's TEN conferences, and professional development sessions. Matt sponsors the world famous Kenwood board game and camping clubs. Outside of education, he is a musician, hobby game designer, and painter. He loves his amazing family, orcas, regular bears, and the Chicago Bears.
Matt believes that a well-rounded and balanced art education provides essential value for all students, widening their view of the human experience, and fueling their potential as active & meaningful contributors to society at large. |
JOY SCHULTZ

Joy Schultz is the NAEA Choice Art Co-President and taught all levels K-12 Art Education for 29 years. Joy’s career includes teaching in Public and Independent schools. Courses included AP Studio Art, Drawing, Painting, Printmaking, Media Art, Convergent Technology, and Foundations of Art. Joy received a B.S.E. K-12 Art Education from the University of Whitewater Wisconsin and a M.A. in Visual Studies at Cardinal Stritch University in Milwaukee. After spending half of her career in Wisconsin, she moved to Little Rock Arkansas, where she built a Choice Art program with a strong emphasis on community arts events/service. Joy has presented at the National and State level for several years. Currently, Joy is working on building a community Choice-Based program, publishing articles, and serving as the Co-President for the NAEA Choice Art Interest Group. Joy has earned several honors and awards for her teaching including the Presidential Scholars Teacher Award 2005, Arkansas Art Educators High School Art Teacher of the Year 2015-16, Stephens Teacher of the Year 2013, and The City of Little Rock Teacher of the Year 2018. Joy is looking forward to sharing her knowledge and experience through this blog and other publications.

JANELL MATAS

Janell Matas is an art teacher at Naperville North High School, in the western suburbs of Chicago. Janell graduated from Northern Illinois University with a B.S. in Art Education and later received an M.F.A. in Sculpture, also from Northern Illinois University. She has been teaching since 1998, where she began as an elementary art teacher in Belvidere, IL and then moved to high school at St. Charles East and Streamwood High Schools. Over these 20 some years, she has been able to teach a wide range of ages, diverse populations, as well as a multitudes of art classes. Her teaching philosophy stems from her DBAE training, low risk practice of techniques as well as asking herself when creating lessons, "Will students want to keep and show others this work?" Currently, Janell teaches all levels of drawing and painting, as well as AP Art History, and AP Art and Design (all 3 portfolios). She has also taught Art Fundamentals, Sculpture, Ceramics, Introductory Photography and Digital Art. Janell enjoys creating artwork, traveling and hiking with her family, and following her two sons in their soccer endeavors.

FRANCISCO MATAS

Frank Matas is an art teacher and Danielson Leader for the CTE-FA Department at Lake Park High School, in the western suburbs of Chicago. Frank holds a B.S. in Art Education and an M.F.A. in Painting, both from Northern Illinois University, and has been teaching since 1998. Frank later received an M.S. in Educational Leadership from Concordia University. Frank teaches a variety of media including AP Studio Art (all 3 portfolios). Frank enjoys telling dad jokes, traveling with his family, and cheering his boys during their many soccer excursions.

ELIZABETH OSBORNE

Elizabeth Osborne teaches at Kenwood Academy (Chicago Public Schools) and she is committed to the community, school, and its students. She is passionate about art and photography and has centered her life around teaching and making it. She holds a BA in Art Education from the University of Illinois at Chicago, is National Board Certified, and is currently pursuing a Masters in Education. Elizabeth teaches Photography and AP 2D-Design, and is the Art Department Chair.

TODD OSBORNE

Todd Osborne has spent his art teaching career working with Chicago Public schools, currently teaching at Kenwood Academy (Chicago Public Schools). He currently teaches digital art, but has also taught several different media over the years, including his time teaching at Gallery 37, teaching advanced sculpture. Todd has a BA from the University of Illinois at Chicago, and is currently completing his Masters in Art Education at the School of the Art Institute Chicago. Todd also continues extensive work with Chicago Public Art Group creating and installing murals all over Chicago and the nation.
